Italian economist and statistician. From January 2001 to July 2009 he was Director of Statistics and Chief Statistician of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He was influential in international debates around 'going beyond GDP', later leading to the OECD's Better Life Index, and established the the World Forum on Statistics, Knowledge and Politics, held for the first time in 2004. From April 2013 to February 2014 he was Minister of Labour and Social Policies in the Italian government (as an independent). From August 2009 to April 2013 he was President of the Italian Statistical Institute (Istat).
