In 1982 Ralf Rücks joined the Green Party. He was elected to the Bremen legislative assembly (Bürgerschaft) in 1985 and served as Co-President in the Green Party in 1989/90. Since 1996 he is a member of the executive board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. He wrote a book in 2001 entitled "Is There a Future for the Green Party?" Furthermore he coordinates the issues sustainability, migration, european integration.
